Adame leads Conroe past Atascocita

Currently sitting outside of the Top-4 in District 16-6A, first-year Conroe coach Victor Trejo just wants to see his team finish the year strong.

The Tigers put on a strong effort Tuesday night in their home finale.

Against Atascocita at Buddy Moorhead Memorial Stadium, the Tigers took a 4-3 victory.

Conroe is now 4-5-2 for 14 points in district play and will close out the regular season Friday night at College Park.

“We want to finish strong,” Trejo said. “We brought up a lot of young players to get them experience for next year. I think that’s motivation for them. Coming out and showing everybody that we were in this all along. We struggled, but we were just going to keep on chugging away. We are never going to give up.

“We’ve never been that team.”

The Tigers were set back early against the Eagles (5-7, 15 points).

Sophomore Christian Fierro netted a goal in the 2nd minute to go up 1-0.

The lead didn’t stand long as five minutes later, Conroe senior Fabian Adame netted a goal off a nice pass by sophomore Alexis Calzada Ochoa.

The Tigers went on to dominate play the rest of the half.

Adame, junior Juan Carlos Jaurigui Martinez, senior Marc Velasquez all had shots on net. Senior David Taboada drilled a shot off the crossbar with seven minutes left in the half.

“I think we had about 10-15 shots on goal,” Trejo said. “The ball just wouldn’t go in. You’ve got to keep working hard and get that result. Luckily in the second half that came.”

Adame’s second goal of the game was a great effort by the senior.

With 26:27 left in the second half, Adame stormed through a cluster of Eagles and put it through.

“He’s been clutch for us all year,” Trejo said. “He’s just a workhorse.”

Unfortunatley for the Tigers, that 2-1 lead only lasted 46 seconds as Fierro put in a rebound at the other end of the field to tie the game back up.

Two minutes and 57 seconds later, Conroe went back up and this time, the lead stuck.

Martinez advanced towards the net on a left angle and put it in.

Conroe added its fourth goal as Adame provided a crossing pass into the goal mouth where Gerardo Godinez buried it into the open net.

Atascocita added a goal with 1:40 left as junior Jovanny Cortes-Ochoa put one in.

Adame proved to be a big factor for Conroe as he factored on three of the four goals.

“You can put him anywhere you want and he’s just going to make things happen,” Trejo said.

“He’s just an amazing player and I hope he goes to better things after this. He definitely helped us pull the win tonight.”
