Families looking to get away for the Bank Holiday weekend were left in misery today as a fire, crashes and emergency repairs resulted in 30-mile motorway tailbacks.

Drivers took to social media as they waited impatiently in queues on the M4 and M25, with some fearing they would miss scheduled flights at Heathrow and Gatwick airports.

A woman called Natasha Whiting tweeted: “Anyone going out of #london watch out #traffic is sooooooo bad. #m4 #m25 #bankholidayweekend.”

Another user, Catherine Hadler, added: “if you’re considering driving along the M4/M5 south today, I’d wait a bit, I just drove past solid #traffic from nearly Exeter to Newbury.”
